Ingrown Nail

What is an Ingrown Toenail?Ingrown

An ingrown nail is when the outer border of the nail is curved and growing into the skin. When this occurs, the skin becomes irritated often causing pain, redness and swelling of the toe.

Furthermore, bacteria may enter through a break in the skin, which can lead to an infection. Once infected, there is usually foul odour and drainage.

Causes

The most common causes of an ingrown toenail include trauma to the toe (ex. from running / stubbing) or from improper trimming (cutting nails too short). Other causes include poorly sized shoes, genetics and nail diseases.
