A fungus is a type of micro-organism that thrives in warm, moist environments. The toenails can become infected with fungus and cause a condition known as onychomycosis. This is a common problem amongst varying age groups.
Once infected, the nails progressively condition change in colour and thickness. They can also become foul smelling as debris collects under the nail plate
Toenail fungus is often caused by another fungus growing on the skin (ex. Athlete’s Foot). Other causes include trauma, poor hygiene, and immune-deficiency conditions. The fungus starts at the edge of the nail and with time it gradually causes colour changes. As the disease progresses, the nail can thicken and deform to the point where it can become difficult to trim.
