Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis)

Heel pain is the most common ailment foot doctors see. Many different types of conditions can cause heel pain, the most common of which is Plantar Fasciitis. When you see your foot and ankle specialist he will examine your foot to rule out other causes of heel pain including: a fracture, arthritis, nerve impingement and bone cysts.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

This foot problem is characterized by inflammation around the band of tissue on the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. This piece of tissue attaches to your heel bone and extends out towards the toes. When the fascia is inflamed, it results in pain in the heel.

Causes

The inflammation of the plantar fascia is usually the result of microtrauma to the tissue itself. This trauma is either because of abnormal function or structure of the foot. High impact activities (ex. Running / jumping exercises), poor footgear, and walking on hard surfaces can perpetuate symptoms.

Symptoms

Diagnosis

Your foot ankle specialist will review your history and evaluate your foot to rule out other causes of heel pain other than plantar fasciitis. In some cases, diagnostic studies (ex. X-rays, lab tests, etc.) will be ordered to help make a diagnosis. At times, plantar fasciitis can result in a heel spur to form, but they are usually not the source of pain.  Once diagnosed, the appropriate treatment regimen will be outlined by your doctor.
