Gout

188057969What is Gout?

This is a condition that can often develop in feet as a result of buildup of uric acid crystals in the tissues surrounding a joint. These crystals precipitate to the coolest, most distant areas of the feet and often affect the joint at the base of the big toe. That being said, it can occur in the lesser digits as well:

Causes

A buildup of uric acid occurs as a result of the body producing too much of it or not eliminating enough of it in the urine. Factors that affect the tendency to accumulate uric acid include: family history, high blood pressure, surgery, diabetes, obesity, certain medications, and alcoholism.

Foods and beverages that contain a high level of purines (breaks down into uric acid) can also trigger a gouty flare. Some examples include red meats, organ meats (liver/kidney), shellfish and alcoholic beverages.

Symptoms

Diagnosis

To diagnose gout, your doctor will discuss your medical history with you in detail. The joint in question will be evaluated and lab tests may be ordered to check your uric acid level. Additionally, x-rays may be ordered to rule out any other causes of joint pain.
