Ankle Sprains

What is an Ankle Sprain?

It is an injury of one or more ligaments supporting the ankle joint. Ligaments are a type of tissue that holds bones together. The ligaments around the ankle provide stability by reducing the amount of side-to-side movement. There are three different grades of ankle sprains. The severity of the sprain is dependent on how many ligaments are injured and whether they are stretched, partially torn, or completely torn. Ankle ligs

Causes

This condition is usually the result of an “inversion” type injury where the ankle suddenly twists and forces the ankle joint out of its normal position. It can occur during falls, collisions and sporting activities. Factors that make the ankle more vulnerable to a sprain are activities on uneven terrain, usage of inappropriate footgear, elastic ligaments and a history of ankle sprains.

Symptoms

Why is treatment needed?

An untreated sprain can lead to chronic ankle instability. With this, there will be a constant sensation that the ankle is about to come out of its joint. Thus, it’s important to see a foot and ankle specialist promptly to receive medical attention and start rehabilitation. In some cases, a severe ankle sprain may cause a bone injury that can lead to complications.

Diagnosis

To assess your ankle, we first obtain a thorough history from you and correlate it to your exam. From there we determine whether x-rays or advanced imaging is required to evaluate the extent of your injury.
